How to Be an Inclusive Leader: Your Role in Creating Cultures of Belonging Where Everyone Can Thrive

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA  (June 3, 2019)
—In her new book, How to Be an Inclusive Leader: Your Role in Creating Cultures of Belonging Where Everyone Can Thrive (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 2019, ISBN 9781523085170), award-winning entrepreneur, speaker and best-selling author, Jennifer Brown calls upon her fourteen years of experience as a workplace diversity and inclusion consultant to skip right past the “why” of diversity and get straight to the “how” in order to drive real change in the workplace. The book is currently available for pre-sale and will become available for sale on August 20, 2019.

Drawing on years of work with many leading organizations, Jennifer Brown shows what leaders at any level can do to spark real change in the workplace. In her new book, Brown guides readers through the Inclusive Leader Continuum – a four step journey that codifies developmental stages (unaware, aware, active, and advocate) for all leaders who want to take on the task of creating an inclusive space. Brown illustrates the hallmarks of each stage, the behaviors and mind-sets that inform it, and what readers can do to keep progressing. Whether a powerful CEO or a new employee without direct reports, How to Be an Inclusive Leader will meet readers where they are and provide them with a road map that will help to create a workplace of greater mutual understanding where everyone’s talents can shine.

As a woman and a member of the LGBTQ community herself, Brown understands what it means for an individual to hide their true self in the workplace for fear of not being fully embraced. She has found that too many employees do not feel the support they need at work to be able to express their truest talents and deepest passions, greatly impacting the organization’s bottom line growth.

“In my early years as a professional, I faced the challenges of what it meant to be underrepresented and invisible in the workplace. My journey has given me the courage to be not only be myself, but to share my experiences and passion for advocacy to help organizations and individuals create cultures of belonging where everyone can thrive and contribute to their fullest potential, and I’m excited to share that in my new book” states Brown.

Many people, especially those of marginalized and oppressed groups, may feel as though they cannot bring their true selves to work, which can affect productivity in the workplace. Human potential, as Brown notes, is deeply linked to a feeling of belonging. Inclusive workplaces create a higher engagement, stronger performance, and ultimately, more profit for the organization. While there are many different books and media that present evidence that diversity is important, this book was born out of Brown’s realization that very few books show how to actually create a diverse and inclusive workplace for all.
